I have a 2000 F-350 Quad 4x4 7.3 turbo deisel 6 speed manual and am interested in "possibly" buying a performance tuner to increase milage and power. NOT TO RACE kids on the weekend. All the manufacturers say they have the best one and some warn against using the other firms product. Does anyone one know which brand is the best, safest and easiest on the engine? Are there any consumer report type road tests out there??
Usually custom burned chips are the best for performance and will notice the biggest difference. I have DI 4-pos. flip chip and love it. I like the ability to flip from one setting to the next, instantly, instead of having to download the program to the computer. The superchips, etc. are good, but they just come in a box, not specially programmed for you truck. The are nice though because some of them have code readers on them, so if your truck throws an error code and you use your tuner to read it and find out what's wrong.
For your application, I'd look at getting around 60-75hp. It will help tremendously with towing and mileage, at the very least, will stay the same.
Follow up. I tow a 2005 35 ft Jayco Eagle 5th Wheel, fully loaded it weighs close to 12k combined with the truck we're at 20k. I live in WA state so I have to pull one or two mountain passes EVERYTIME I go anywhere so I need the best tow safe tuner made. I have the 6 speed manual transmission so I'm not worred about over loading the transmission only the engine and turbo. Thanks greatly if you have good advice.
If you haven't heard already, as I'm sure you will many more times, when adding a chip/tuner, you need a foundation for it: intake, exhaust and gauges. The intake helps increase filtration, as the stock box is pretty much junk. Exhaust helps keep your EGT's cooler, full 4" is common, and gauges help you monitor everything. You'd need at minimum a pyrometer to monitor your EGT's, a boost gauge is nice, and you could add a tranny temp gauge, but you have a manual so you don't really need it, but it can never hurt.
MM: I have a Hypertech Power Programmer II on Mobey!! I love it and I would have no other!!
No Chip of Programmer will get you better fuel mileage!!
They will void the warranty on the motor at least if no the whole truck!! (I didn't put mine on untill 100,000 miles 194,000 miles now!!)
I pull a 10,000# trailer about 8% of the time!!

I have a super chips micro tuner on my 2003 f350 cc 4x4 and love it. I do get better fuel mileage with it I gained about 2 mpg. I have 35" tires so I only avg. 15 mpg. I have made no other mods to the truck, but know a pyrometer is needed.
Thanks Farmboy from Iowa... I do plan on upgrading my airflow both in and out. Do you recommend any specific brand of gauges?
With gauges, do a lot of looking! There are a lot of brands out there. I have Autometer Sport Comp gauges and really like them. Got them for right at $300. If you find the gauges you want, look through a lot of stores to find a better price.
My chip, along with all the other mods I did, did increase my fuel mileage. Bone stock I would get 13-14mpg, I'd calculate it every time I fueled up, just to see how it's always doing. Now with all my mods, in the summer I'll get 15-16mpg, in the winter with wither blended fuel (will normally decrease your fuel mileage) I'll average 14-15mpg. Even if my mileage didn't increase, I'd still be happy because I have a lot more ponies and better performance than stock.
The predator tuner has been the easiest, least expensive, and most effective modification that I have done to my 2002 psd. The 60 hp economy tune increased milege by 4 mpg and delivered an impressive power increase. I was quite surprised to get such big results with such a minimal effort.
