Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

I am writing for my husband (please forgive any mis-wording)....

He changed a rear drivers side brake line on his 1983 F-250 truck. He was worried about the bleeder fittings bieng really rusty...well...they were. He ended up breaking it trying to get it loose (He tried several sprays to loosen...no luck). Does anyone know how to solve this problem? Otherwise he said he would try bleeding from the brake line...and hope it works .

Any help would be tremendously appreciated!!!

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

its messy and prolly not as effective but i have bled brakes by cracking a line.

it might be a lost cause and replacing the rear wheel cylinder (don't believe these are too much $) could be required.

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

You might be further ahead just replacing the wheel cylinders. Mine were frozen up anyway.

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

Kind of figured. I did some research for the hubby (Just in case he doesn't know how to do that...lol). Found a article that explained how to replace or rebuild (obviously rebuild is out of the question).

http://autorepair.about.com/library/weekly/aa021701a.htm

The wheel cylinders go for around $10 - $30 depending on Brand, warranty, and cylinder bore (15/16", 1 1/16", or 1")...so this shouldn't hurt the pocket book too much.

Thanks for the help everyone!!

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

depending on what your brake innards look like and not meaning to snowball the job too much but while you're in there you might consider getting a new spring kit, they aren't too spendy either and you've gotta take em all off anyways.

Is this the same as the Wheel Cylinder Kit? No luck searching for Spring Kit at our local auto part store site.

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

Think I found it...

Wheel Cylinder Kit Operation:
Kits usually contain dust boots, cups, pistons, and in some cases, compression springs or spring pads for rebuilding wheel cylinders. The boots keep debris out of the cylinder, cups prevent fluid pressure loss and the springs hold the cups against the pistons when the system is not pressurized.

Around $4 a kit...

not sure what the parts store would label it. i checked napaonline quickly and it looked like they listed the various springs individually, the box i got contained all the required springs. maybe they just sell em individually now, its been a few years. good luck.

thats not what i was thinking of, that sounds more like smaller springs used to hold pieces of the wheel cylinder together. the wheel cylinders were so cheap i've never bothered to rebuild one.

this is one of em (hopefully pic works )

http://www.napaonline.com/images_products/full_sized/42950.jpg

they hold the shoe assembly together and retract the shoes off the drum when you aren't pressing the brake pedal. there is this long one that holds the shoes together, there are two small ones that hold the shoes to the backing plate, and there is a medium sized spring towards the bottom of the shoes holding em together.

depending on the condition of your current springs it might not be worth the hassle tracking em down. if yours aren't all rusted or missing entirely you'd prolly be fine.

Help!!! I have a brake problem!!

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 06-Aug-02 AT 04:44 PM (EST)]Think I am getting closer....found a Universal return spring so far on napa (looks like picture). Only one size though so far.

Or there is this on another site

Brake Hardware - Drum Operation:
A prepackaged set containing the contents needed to secure the shoes to the backing plate, activate the parking brake and help the shoes self-adjust. It includes a hold-down pin, spring, cup, shoe retracting spring, parking brake adjuster lever and strut and self adjusting cable and star wheel mechanism. Multiple sets may be needed to complete the installation.
