I bought my 99 Expy new and have never kept a car as long as I have kept this one. I have two minor problems. First, my right side rear view mirror glass is checked and it makes it hard to view through it. I have heard you can replace just the glass. Is this true? If so, does it take a special tool to pop the glass out? Second, as long as I can remember there has always been a thump sound underneath whenever I hit a bump. It almost sounds like a loose shock or something else loose underneath. Any suggestions to these two problems would be greatly appreciated.
Welcome to FTE. Don't know about the mirror. Check the suspension. My 99 had a broken link making a noise. It is a vertical plastic (yes plastic) rod with a bolt through it, about 5" long with rubber bushings top and bottom. Actually the plastic held and the bolt broke. Easy fix. But you might have other things loose or broken. Pull the wheel and check things out. Good luck with it.
Check with these people www.muthco.com, they replaced mine last year under thier warranty program. I believe they make the mirrors for Ford. I gave them a call and they said they had alot of problems with the inside finish on the mirror's. I had to purchase the new one's but when I returned my old one's they credited my credit card for the full price plus shipping. Give them a call and see if they are still doing this. Have not had the suspension problem.
Thanks for the info, the new mirrors are on their way. Did you install your new mirrors yourself? If so, how hard was it? Was there any tricks to it or special tools to make it easier? Thanks again.
I tried to replace the mirrors on my 99 myself but had problems. I could pull the old ones off easy enough, but I had a really hard time alligning the white plastic pins in the holes when I went to put the new ones in. In fact, I ended up breaking two of the pins and had to call Muth to send me two new ones. I ended up taking it to a glass replacement shop and they put them in for 10 bucks.
trike1946 - what plastic rod are you referring to? Where is it on the suspension. I have the exact same thump noise on my truck. It seems to be coming from the rear of the truck. Do you remember the name of the part? thanks for any info.
After hearing about everyones problems with the plastic clips, I got 1 of the guys at the local dealership to do it on the side for $15 and did not have to worry about getting replacement clips. Good luck
Trike is talking about the swaybar links. These components serve as the connection between the ends of the swaybar and the lower front suspension A-arms. Turn the front wheels to the right, then take a look at the swaybar on the drivers side. The link is the vertical connector between the bar and the lower A-arm. If the sway bar end is just hanging in the air, the link has fallen/broken off. Now turn the front wheels to the left and review the passenger side.
Are there rear sway bars where the linkage could be broken? I'm almost positive it sounds like my thumping noise is coming from the spare tire area too.
Yup, same story on the rear. The rods are metal but seperate from the mounting bolts. Can be fixed pressing the rubber/bolt holder back where it belongs and reinstalling with large washers to keep it all together or bite the bullet and buy a good Helwig sway bar. It is much beefier and not a big problem to install (easier than the above fix actually). Summit has them about a cheap as anyone. Non rubber bushings, hardware, and all. Price?? Was about $100 I think but???
this is a great post. thanks to 18Fan for the information. I just spoke with Denise at Muth (800-844-6616) and she was extremely helpful. I had driven around with those mirrors like that for over a year. To have them fixed under warranty is just wonderful. As 18Fan said, they will charge your card $219, but will refund the $ once they get the defective ones back. Well worth it.

Got the new mirrors today and they were a piece of cake to install. I can't stress enough to follow the instructions. Using a blow dryer to heat things up really made it easier. There are four pins that go back in and at first I thought I had to try and guide all four back in at the same time. What a chore, until I reread the instructions and it said two of them were to be placed into the base, so that only left two that needed to be guided in.
Had The Same "clunk" On Our 99, Tightened The Left Rear Lower Shock Mount And The "clunk" Went Away For A Few Months, Reappeared, Retighten, Gonei Get A Squeak From The Swaybar Bushings That I Have To Put A Drop Or Two Of Oil On To Keep Them Quiet
