OK,
I changed the orange/brown wire from the batt side of the altenator to the solenoid... charging problem fixed! But... I shut off the engine and went to re-start but nothing happens when I turn the key, no door buzzer, no headlights, no anything! I checked the connections, battery, fuseable links to the solenoid, ground cable & connection, fuses. if I jump the solenoid, the motor will crank but will not start even with the key on. It's as if everything is dead beyond the solenoid! No power to anything in the cab at all. Is there a main circut breaker somewhere??
One of the important wires off the solenoid is a yellow wire. It should be hooked to the bat side of the solenoid. Take a test light and pierce the insulation and see if you have voltage on this wire. Then follow this wire down a little ways because then it splits up and goes different directions.
OK,
I followed the large yellow wire into the dash where it ended at the Door open buzzer. I checked and there was 12 volts at the connector. lost the path from there. Seems to have voltage all over in dash but nothing electrical will work! brake lights, head lights - keyswitch, nothing! all fuses are ok!
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 08-Aug-02 AT 07:43 PM (EST)]I had a similar problem when I changed engines. A guy that was helping had the wires reversed on the alternator. But recently I had the problem when I turned off at the gas station and went to start it up nothing. After a couple of days of searching i found that a positive battery cable that was recently replaced was not making good connection. I had 12 volts at the solenoid but when i tried starting the engine there wasen't enough connection being made to handle the power. The end just twisted off in my hand with little effort. I also installed a gauge cluster underneath the dash for more accurate readings of the oil, volts, and temp. Hope you find your problem soon. I will be watching. I have learned alot by reading these messages.
