The **** on the light switch shaft is not intended to be removed; rather you should be pulling out the entire shaft w/**** while depressing a tab on the top of the actual light switch body.
The Wiper switch **** should have a springy steel catch to hold the **** onto its shaft, similar to the apparatus on a storm door pneumatic closer shaft that holds it open. For removal, you use a U-shaped wire, or similar, to pull on that catch at the same time you apply pressure to the **** itself. The wire hook goes into a molded notch on the ****. It's a little awkward for the first time you try it.
