I have a 1994 F-150 with an inline six and auto tranny. In the speed range of 65-70mph it makes a loud humming noise that seems to come from directly under the cab. My dad said it might be the universal joints going out. How do you tell if the U-joints are bad? Could the transmission or differential be making the noise? Any ideas would be appreciated.
Does it go squeak, squeak squeak when slowly backing up???? That is a true telltale sign of bad u-joints. The needle bearings are probably completely rusted away/broke/missing, and it's time for new bearings. My truck (same as yours, but 92) needed new u-joints at 120,000 miles/ten years. If you never changed the u-joints, have over 100,000 miles, live in a salt/snow state??.. then add that repair task to your to-do list.
when the U-joints went bad on my old truck the thing felt like a paint shaker over about 35mph. If they are bad enough to make a constant noise I would think you should be getting some vibration at least. If you want to check them though just slide under your turck and hold both sides of joint wiggle them every dirrection you can think to see if you have any play. Check all your fluids you might have a leak in your trans or diff and be low, this would give you a hum from the gears meshing up.
The truck has 165,000 miles so I am guessing you right about the joints needing to be replaced. It dose not make squeaking noises but their is a fair amount of play in the joints. I will have to check the fluid levels to make shure they are ok. I guess I will go ahead and change the u-joints and see if that will fix the problem.
Thanks for your help.
neocowboy is probably right about the vibration, have u thought bout the tires maybe? all terrain tend to create noise on city streets, maybe that could help
