I recently purchased a 96 Ford Explorer 5.0 AWD as a rebuilder. It was lightly hit in the left front corner. I replaced the spindle, CV Joint, fender and bumber. After getting it all assembled I found I have 3 wheel drive! When I installed the CV Joint I definatly felt it engage in the spider gear, and now I'm wondering how I could have the right front wheel spinning without the left. I think the ring and pinion must be good (demostrated by the spinning right front wheel) and unless the front axle has posi (which I'm betting isn't even an option) the spider gears must be good as well. With an "open" axle power always goes the the wheel that spins the easiest... which would mean that if the drivers side spider gear was broken, it would spin the easiest and again, I shouldn't be seeing the right front wheel spinning.... I'm stumped, and really not looking foward to opening it up...
3 wheel drive is right as you have what’s called an open rear end and posi is not offered in the front end. Only way to have true 4x4 is to put lockers or weld the spider together .If you do that you lose the turning ability of the truck. Most 4x4 are really only a 2 wheel drive one front and one back just opposite corners. So your front end is most likely just fine. I have always called mine three wheel drive just for fun so go out play with it and enjoy it
How did you discover you have 3 wheel drive? A better explaination of the circumstances would help the diagnostics. It could be something binding on the left side that was hit.
Unless he has a posi or locker up front it is power to one side only that is how there set up as OEM. I also have a posi rear end stock and an open rear in the front both stock and ford dose not even offer a posi or locker for the front only after market. So with the front end if the wheel with the most traction sits still and the one on say like ice spins that is normal. That is why they put the power to say like front right rear left but if one side of the truck is on ice like both left side tiers then your stuck. just the way it is .I know had it happen in a dodge they forgot to put the posi in when it was ordered and I got stuck in the snow next week new rear end no cost .
