Hey guys I am a newbie and I need some ford truck expertese. I am looking at buying my neighbors 85 f-150 2wd single cab swb. It has a 302 with the 2bbl and I think the tranny is the c6. I am not sure I haven't checked it completly out yet. The gear indicator has a drive option and a over drive option.... D (D). Don't know if that helps.
Anyway my question. I want to Rod the truck out. I am planning on changing the carb..intake...cam and heads...then later exhaust. But I don't want to deal with the o2 sensors if it has them...not sure and all of the other stuff that is on there factory. So can I just take all that crap off and just go to a edelbrock carb and new manifold with out hurting anything? My goal is just to simplify the system...i.e no electronic gadgets that deal with emissions and things liket that. So what all do I need to look at and has anyone done this???
Thanks a lot in advance...please help this will help in my decision making.
If it has an overdrive selection, it's probably an AOD. For converting it over, you will also need an older type electronic distributor and duraspark module, or you can go completely aftermarket with a dist and electronic spark box. If it is an AOD overdrive, make sure you get the cable hooked up from the tranny to the carb throttle correctly. Here's a link that may help:
But I guess I just don't understand too much though.
This is what I am gathering...
I can replace the carb but have to make sure that the tv cable gets put back on. Then as far as the ingnition box goes I just need to get like a MSD ignition and coil with a new distributor??
Or would I be able to keep the distributor?
See I haven't had a chance to look at the motor that much so I am not totally keen into what the motor looks like.
I used to have a 67 Cougar with a 302 so that I know. Just the aod and everything with the way the stock holley is set up and the ignition throws me for a loop.
When you get a chance, look at the dist on the motor you are converting. If it has a vacuum advance can, you are ok. If not, the timing is controlled by the computer system, and you will have to ditch the dist for:
Old points style dist
duraspark II dist + duraspark module + a little rewiring
aftermarket dist + whatever box it requires to make it run
