I have this problem and am a little puzzled, It is now really cold here. when I turn the key the engine starts and as soon as I release the key the engine cuts off. If I hold the key on the engine runs can rev engine etc.. thus I now have a new starter. If I mess with it long enough eventually it will stay running. is this a choke issue I have tried starter fluid holding the choke open etc.. any ideas would be a great help as snow is on its way and this is my truck with the plow.
if I take the air cleaner off and get a can of stater fluid, what should I do next spray fluid into two barrels or all four and hold the flap open or not please help. the snow is starting. thanks
If you have to use starter fluid, first off make sure you get some with upper cylinder lube.
Hold your throttle wide open and give it a couple of quick shots in the primarys. Once you engine warms up to operating temp, loosten the three screws on the electric choke and turn it back and forth till it just starts to close. Back it up just a hair and tighten the three screws. That will give you a proper setting. If it still has "issues" (like all my trucks do) than look into giving it a tuneup. Plugs, wires, cap, and rotor. The cold can wreak havoc on worn out parts. Good luck, Dave
Ok I figured it out. when I start it if I release the key 95% it stays running fine. it seems as though it is a connection in the ignition switch. is there something I can do to clean the connection. spray etc.... It is a little hard to drive while holding the key.. It seems as though I don't need the starter fluid as long as I hold the key. thanks
I got it. just got in from plow run number one. it was the switch, bought a new one, droped the steering column and undid the two bolts in slid a little so I slid it as far toward the steering wheel as I could. put the column back up and presto she fired up and stayed running. I will replace the switch later if I need to. Now to thaw with a little bourbon maybe.
