Hello folks,Ihave a small problem thats starting to bug me.Although it doesnt overheat why does my 84 f-150,which i bought new, temperture rise to just under the point of overheating according to the guage when i turn heater on?When i turn heater off or even down the temp drops rapidly back to just a quarter way up on guage.Guage does mot have temp readings ,just says normal, the extreams im talking about are needle goes to o to r when no heat is on to between a and l when heat is turned on.Thanks in advance for anyinfo.Paul
It may be the guage gremlin. There are some troubles with the guages that behave like this. Around this place there are 4 out of 7 mid 80's pickups that have this problem. Usually it seems to be related to the tank switches and senders, and usually the front tank.
If you don't have one, see if you can get ahold of one of those laser thermometers (point the laser at something and it tells the temp). When the guage shows the cool range, see what the temp is at the thermostat housing. Turn on the heater and test it again. Try a few different scenarios to see if there is any difference. If it is the guage gremlin this should give you peace of mind.
If it is the guage gremlin, I have never really speant a lot of time trying to fix it. I have seen posts here in the past that mention a guage transformer or regulator or something in that area. Maybe they will post more about it here.
