So I've been searching for parts (gears and spools so far) for 9" axles that i'm planning on building (see thread 9" front axles if you don't know what i'm doing) on ebay and i was trying to find a set of 5.14/5.00 front, and a 5.14/5.29/5.8 rear gears, i've learned (and been told in this forum and over on pirate, and other places) that having a slight difference (like .2) between front and rear gear helps the front end float better, and the truck go straighter in the mud, and thus my gear choices, but is the trouble of finding these different gears (i can only find a 5.29 set next to the 2 5.13/5.14 sets i've found) is kinda of hard as i don't want to spend more than 50-60 bucks for a set, and the 5.29 set (it comes with a carrier and richmond min spool, 31spl) is approaching 50 bucks with 4 days to go.
So my question there is it really worth it to have gears with a .2 or so difference?
My next question, and the point of this thread is about how low of gear can you go before its to low with a 35" tall tire. Now i was try to keep it in the 5.00-5.38 range as these seem to a more common gear, but it seems that they want a little more, as more people know what they are, but i've found used 6.66 and a 6.84 gear sets with no reserve and the price is way low in my range.
But is this to low of gear for only 35" tires (i will probably go to a 39.5 next), but also i still have a relatively stock motor (cleveland 4v heads/intake/cam/carb/headers on the way) and the gears would help me out in the power department, but is a 6.66/6.84 gear to low for my application? (remember mud bogging). Or should i stick with my orignal intentions (above)? Or go with a 5.13/5.14 gear set instead?
mustang, if those 6.88 gears are so cheap, if you have the chance why not ****** them? I mean...I'm sure you'll find a use for them someday =). You said the other was like 50 bucks, and if those 6.88's are even cheaper then O_O.
That's over twice the ratio of my old 89. *shakes head*
Just curious, monsterbaby what kind of gears you running?
5.00 in the rear, don't remember off hand what the brand is but they are used nascar gears that were polished to nice mirror shine, nothin like bling you can't see. frt are 4.88 yukon gears.
BTW if you really want 5.00, and find a set of 5.13 that are in good shape I would be willing to work out a trade with ya. as I think I need a little more seperation in mine.
And Saurin, I haven't even gotten a chance to start on you yet when I am done corrupting you, your wallet won't be able to afford it even after college
But you're helping, or would it be hurting? Anyways...its not good.
I should be thankful I don't have an older truck right now. I think I'd already be starting. ^_^
My grandpa has an old 80's SA F250 sitting with a blown 351W sitting in it that is just sitting in his yard. Keeps giving me ideas every time I see it... =)
Thanks for the props on the other thread Pro. Surprised me, but it meant quite a bit to get such from you. =)
Hey Jacob I happened to have just picked up a couple of big block C6 trannies this weekend that we can replace the small block tranny with, and have an extra 460 laying around so we can get you started out right.
What would be wrong with running 6.50 gears without low range?
hmm..
I assume you run low range when bogging, right?
Do the math 5.00 gears with a 1.97:1 low range = 9.85 gears. Running a 6.50 gear with in high would be like running 3.29 gears in low range isn't low enough.
Yeah monster (i sent you a pm) those gears are staying cheap and it seems those are the ones that are easy to get, so i would be up for a trade, as i won't be able to start working on these till at least spring break.
I usualy run it in 2nd gear and low range, as then if the pit is long enough i can shift it into 3rd, and the distance between 2nd and third is shorter than 1st to 2nd.
Oh and them 6.84 gears are climbing in price quickly, so i doubt that they would stay in my budget (50 bucks, as i want to get the gears and spools for 200 bucks total), but i could use those 6.84 gears in my flareside at the track. . . . . . . then shove a mini spool in there, then i will need to upgrade the clutch to a full race, dump a 200 shot of nos, wait, i need to finsih the 81 before i start doing that (dang, quite putting ideas in my head )
