Quick Hello and Cold Start Question

Hello all...I am sort of new to these forums so bear with me. I recently (this week) traded my 2003 F250 Crew Cab, 7.3 Diesel for a 2005 F150 SCAB FX4. I freakin love this new truck. The reason a traded was that the diesel and I had the same temperment (bad) and we just were not getting along...so I ended the relationship . These new 150's can pull and/or haul all my toys anyway. I've got a couple of 4 wheelers, 26' bumper pull camper, and all the other stuff that goes with it.

One question I have...Has anyone heard of there being a TSB on cold starting. The reason I ask is that when I test drove the truck last Saturday, the dealer had to jump it. Granted it was about 10 degrees here in KC. I went back Monday to do the paperwork and they had to jump it 3 more times and I had them put a new battery in it while I was waiting. Took the truck home and got up to go to work Tuesday morning, turned the key, and "click". I took it in to the service department and they kept it all day Tuesday and most of Wednesday and the incident has not happened since. They ran all of the diagnostic stuff and said that everything checked out. The weather has been much more reasonable here lately though. This Sunday morning it is supposed to be 7 degrees again, so I will run another experiment. If anyone has heard of anything, let me know...

Hey HighTek...congrats on the new purchase!!

I did a search on the ODI database and didn't come up with any similar complaints.
You can look for yourself at:

http://www-odi.nhtsa.dot.gov/cars/problems/tsb/

I've been on this board for a little over a year now, and really haven't seen too many problems of this nature. Since they already replaced the battery, I'd have them do a cranking amps check, an alternator/voltage regulator check, and somehow check for a constant drain on the batt when the vehicle is off.

I'm sure it will get figured out. Good luck and many happy miles!!!

I friend of mine had the same problem with a 2000 Dodge. He bought the truck in July and no problems. The first very cold night, dead battery. Dealer replaced the battery and everything was good until the next winter then dead battery again. This went on another winter and then started happening in the summer. Warranty ran out, but dealer was helpful. Dealer kept saying there was something draining the battery but could not find it. They finally found a wire was pinched during assembly when the drivers seat was installed.

It's been at or around -22 F up here in the Great White North for the last few weeks. Other than having to plug the block heater in, no cold starting problems. At 10 degrees you should have no problems what so ever.

Dude I had the same thing happen to me after going hunting. It sat there in the field for about 4 hours. I got in, started it, ran about 3 mile's then had to stop for a drink. When I started the truck the truck acted like the battery was dead for about 3 seconds then started right up. It was about 32 degrees. It's warmed up quite a bit down here in Alabama and the truck has not done it sense. After the temp's you guys are posting you'll are probuly laughing you'r tails off about 32 F. For a southern boy, That COLD. Good luck with you'r trucks!

Thanks all for the feedback. The dealer did a battery drain test over a couple of days and it tested fine. I was a little flustered going from a F250 Crew 4X4, to the new F150, then a little Escape while they were testing it! Ha...but I'm back in the 150 now. It was 7 degrees here Sunday morning so I ran out and she started right up. I guess I had a little gremlin somewhere. Hopefully, he's gone now. I'm headed to the muffler shop this week to have a Magnaflow installed. Then I will work on getting the intake in. Any of you guy's and gal's have any recommendations for air intakes or should I stick with the factory setup...?

Thanx again....

Welcome to the FTE Forum. You can get lots of information here from some very nice folks. Regarding intakes; some guys like K&N, some Volant, etc. You can do a search for *air intakes* and get a jillion messages on the subject Congrats on the new truck!
