What do underdrive pulley's do? Are they worth it?

The underdrive pulley lessens the rotating mass of the engine therefore freeing up lost horsepower. The pulley is lighter and of smaller diamater and the engine has less weight to turn over. This allows for faster revs of the engine and as mentioned before a few free hp's.

The smaller diamater of the pulley however does come into play with the belt driven pulleys on your vehicle. The alt and ps will not turn as fast so you may incounter problems with these.

In my opinion on a truck unless your going all out on the engine, I would not go through the trouble. I would try to round up extra hp other places such as exhaust and the intake side of things. There is a lot of info on these around I assume. I would rather put an underddrive pulley on a smaller 4cyl.

But that is my personal opinion, it does help acceleration!

I'm running a set of Ford racing underdrive pullies with an ASP overdrive altenator pulley and they do help with power, the engine revs easier and accelerates a little smoother. I've been running this setup for two years and have had no problems even towing in 100*+ days.

I was wondering since you have a smaller pulley in the alt and ps pump wouldn't they spin faster. Just a thought

Actually most of your power gain comes from decreasing the amount of work being sent to the accessories due to changing the pulley ratio. Sort of like shifting to a lower gear. Probably only a small amount of gain comes from less rotating mass.

The crank pulley is usually the one that's reduced in size.

I'm with 89moman though. From what I've read here and elsewhere they can be problematic. If not properly installed they can come loose. You can have problems charging and steering. Not to say you will have problems, but the possibility is enough for me to continue thinking twice for now.

I have an underdrive pulley on my 302, wouldnt do it again, I don' like the huge swing in charging and the dim lights at idle. Doesn't seem to provide much difference in power.
