I have read a lot of comments that these are very light duty trannys. A lot of people want to swap the mazda to a zf which are in f-250 and 350's.

You can say that they are weak and some might be at some time in their life. But my dad had an M5OD and I have one. Both trucks were/are used as work trucks. Behind my 300 it hasn't let me down yet. I have had the bed filled to the limit and I have had a trailer on the back, the tranny has never let me down. The crappy slave needed to be replaced since it wasn't taken care of by the previous owner. My dad sold his truck with almost 500,000 miles and he never once touched the tranny. Changed the fluid every 75,000 and checked on the clutch fluid, but that was it. So go for it.

The biggest problem I have read is they tend to leak fluid from a couple of plastice pieces in the top of the trans and this leads to trans failure because the leak is slow and is not detected in time.

That is a problem, there are 3 little rubber plugs on the back side of the shift plate and they tend too dry up and leak, ford carries a kit too fix this problem and they are little metal caps that you hammer in the place of the rubber ones.

That is the only real problem with the tranny itself. Otherwise it is a great tranny, but the slave can be a problem, like I said. If that is fixed then you are golden. Also, if you are a good truck owner you would know if you were low on fluid, based on noise and such. For me its checked every time I am under the truck, which is often with the cleaning and checking and repairing of things that haven't been changed since it left the assembly line.
