ac question...

I have a '96 F250 XL 4x4 extended cab with a 351W. It has 204k on it right now. I bought the thing wrecked about 30k miles ago, and have since fixed all the damage. Though I doubt it matters, it was bounced off a tree pretty hard, travelling backwards, and all the damage was done to the r-rear corner and passenger side. Nothing up front. The AC has not worked since I put this the truck back on the road. The system does have a charge in it and the compressor does turn over by hand. I does not engage when the selector is in any of the AC positions or defrost. Any suggestions where to start? Could something have been jarred loose? I know it's winter, but I'm planning a trip to Florida in March with a new born and would kinda like to be prepared. Thanx!

Take the clutch wire connector and attach a volt meter to it, then start the truck and turn the switch to AC or DEFROST. The voltmeter should indicate 12-13V or so. If it doesn't the problem is electrical (start with the fuses and work out). If it does show a voltage, either the connector in your hand is bad, or the clutch itself is an open circuit.

Do note there is an AC interlock on that year, that prevents the AC from going on if its not fully charged. Being that its cold weather, the pressure might be slightly lower from not being fully charged. The interlock switch is on the shiny AC tube on the passenger side of the truck, screwed into a brazed in fitting. DO NOT TAKE THIS OUT while the system is pressurized. I did that once in a junkyard without thinking... it will freeze-damage your skin.
