When i first got my truck the bearings in the alternator were making a little bit of noise. and when you left the engine at an idle with the lights and then shut it off depending on how long it idled the battery would either be dead or low and turn the motor over really slow. I replaced the alternatorand battery and all was good. LAtely the guage on the dash has been reading past the l in normal for volts. I was driving it tonight with the headlights on low, radio on heater on speed 2 and driving 70 mph for about 20 mins i pulled into a wawa to get a drink shut the truck off and when i came back i had a dead battery. after letting it sit i did get enough jiuce to start the motor. now do these things have an external regulater or is it in the alternator? any ideas that i could look into that would be causing the problem?
It would help for me to know what year the truck is, usually if the voltage regulator is internal you will see a box basically in the rear of the alternator, if the voltage regulator is external or internall usually some noticable signs of a bad voltage regualator are a flucation of the lights like at idle there dim and goin down the road when the alternator is capable of charing the battery easier the lights get brighter. A regualtor is just that it prevents to much voltage to go through or out the alternator. Also another reccomendation is to buy a test light and pull off the negative battery cable hook the aligator clip end to the negative terminal place the probe on the clamp that goes onto the battery. If it lights up you have a draw on the battery, thats when it gets confusing to some. Let me know.
sorry about that. the truck is a 1991 ford f-150. it is an xlt lariat ext cab long bed, two wheel drive e4od tranny and 5.8 efi motor. I don't think it has a drain since it was running and only shut off for about 3 mins and then the motor wouldn't turn over fast enough to start the engine.
