96 expl elect problem
posted yesterday on this. A long story but I have not been able to look at battery connectiions but wife gave more info today when it happened the 2nd time.
While driving the radio goes off. Voltage gauge goes to max voltage, battery icon comes on along with ABS light. Then all goes back to normal except the ABS light stays on.
Runs fine the whole time and has no problems starting vehicle.
Apologize for crazy post but in a bit of a rush today
Thanks, Jeff
grounding short???) and why the ABS comes on and stays on? ABS is anti lock brake right??Jeff
The ABS light comes on because the ABS control computer does not appreciate what is happening to its power supply. Think of it the same way as Windows giving you a "blue screen" when power to your house momentarily dips. The computer's brains get scrambled. Had the power failed completely, the computer would have rebooted, but in this case it just sits there with scrambled brains.
In the truck, the momentary sag/surge causes inconsistency checks built into the ABS to trip, and the ABS computer gives up as a safety measure. It does not want to try to control the brakes in any way if there is doubt about its ability to do so. You have to cycle the key to clear this fault.
