yes i know a guy that i bought my pickup from that has a 1985 Ford F250 Ext. Cab XLT 6.9 , C6 dont know how many miles is on it but hes only wanting 600 down on it total of 1700 for it but it has to use either to start everytime, just wondering if i was to get it what could i do other than get another motor for it could i do to it so i wouldnt have to use either on it everytime, just going to use it for a work truck mainly but thinking if i could get it convert it over to 4wd if possible and put a 5 spd in behind the motor and a two way splitter after that and a 1 ton rearend too something basically for work and pulling im willing to spend the money for it but dont have the money to get a rebuilt or remanufactured motor for it if i did that i would go with a cummins in it instead for about the same price dont care how many miles would be on the cummins though but any help would be greatly appreciated thanks yall Lance
You're probably looking at a glo-plug problem. Not too bad to fix, you might just need to clean the glo plugs. However, I've heard that ether is pretty bad for gp's as well as the motor.
Make sure he has been using coolant additive, or you could have an expensive problem down the road.
Don't use ether if you can avoid it. Plug it in over night and see if that helps. Test the gps to see if they are good, and find out if they are getting power.
Ether!!! if used all the time and in long spray to start is not good, will dry out the cylinder walls. So you maybe looking at damaged cylinders. As mentioned before check glow plugs and coolant ph (lots of threads on how to)
the first problem is that either pretty much destroys the glow plugs so figure on replacing them all next i knew that you can hok a switch to your plugs whcih lets you circlulate them yourself the one thing is that they dont circulate long enough to start the motor
The glow plugs are not working. Ether is how we always started our diesels (especially in cold weather) before we had the luxury of glow plugs.
Replace the glow plugs and hook up a pushbutton switch to the relay, and you will be right back in business.
Yes the 85 glow plug system was prone to either not cycle the plugs, or turn them on when you were driving and burn the plugs out.
Push button glow plugs is the way to go.
Also when you replace the glow plugs use Motorcraft/Beru plugs from Autozone, price is as good as you can get and the other brands are bad news in the IH motor.
The diesel has a Sterling 10.25" rear end that is a 1 ton axle already.
By splitter are you talking transfer case or auxiliary transmission?
thanks yall didnt know exactly what i might be looking at on this pickup but thanks it might be worth getting then and how would i hook up the push button for the glow plugs and another thing Dave im talking about putting an auxiliary 2 spd in between the 4 spd or 5 spd transmission and the transfer case if possible but how much would it cost me to convert a 2wd to a 4wd on a 3/4 or a 1 ton crew cab dually just wondering and would a 1997 ford 1 ton single wheel crew cab axles and leaf springs and drivelines, shackles, and transfer case bolt up to a 4 spd mainly jsut wondering how much it might cost me to convert
Not to be skeptical or anything...but how long are you prepared to be without the truck? Taking it back from the ether may be as simple as gp relay, but maybe not. Plus adding a split shift and other changes means time w/o truck and additional funding. It seems like short money to start but...
money for the truck will come out of each paycheck every two weeks as for without the truck thats the reason i have my 1 ton for work and play right now this is basically a project to do and then go 4 wheeling with it lol just think that 4wd 3/4 with a 1 ton axle and all the bells and whistles including stacks lol if im able to do it ill get a pic when i get through with it thanks Lance
yeah, you can even get a regular starter solonoid like the one on the right fender of the 6.9-7.3's and hook up straight to the glowplugs. you will find that 4-seconds is long enough to start the truck as to before, it took 8 seconds. i use ether all the time on my 89 7.3 with 330,000 miles. runs strong and just recently installed a turbo off a cummins. 15 psi boost and ether every time. i love my old ford. just don't spray for longer than 1/2 second if you use glowplugs and no longer than 1 second when not using glowplugs. mine starts then dies and you have to re-use ether if it's colder than 50-55 outside. and how close to corpus christi do you live? i know where a 4x4 is with a 6.9 and a 4speed is for cheep
89Ford7.3 im up by Abilene Texas actually North of Brownwood but have friends down at corpus and over by pearsall just let me know the price for it and is it 3/4 or a 1 ton it really dont matter but really would be good if it ran dont care the miles on it ill drive it until it wont go nowhere lol but it will outlast any 6.5 chevy diesel though lol later yall ill be back later
Hey man, don't trash the motor just yet! I would get new glow plugs for it. Part number ZD9 at autozone or someplace like that. Change ALL the fluids and use a good fuel additive and drive it a couple of weeks and see what happens. These motors are tough and can stand alot of crap. Oh yeah if that don't help check the glow plug relay and the controller. The relay is located behind the battery on the passenger side on the fender well, not on the fender its self. The controller is on the back of the engine under the air filter housing next to the CDR valve, if you know what that is. Tim
P.S. to see pics. of my truck go to ford-trucks and look for whitehorse in the 6.9 forum.
