Iv'e got a question for everyone. Would it be worth the time and money to fully rebuild, including new performance parts or swap out a freshly rebuilt 351 4v from an 83 1 ton? The reason I ask is that with all of the parts that I need to buy as of now it would be cheaper for me to put in the 351, it costs $500, while pars and labor for my six was something like $2-2500. Granted I would like to keep the six, it's never really let me down before, but you cant really beat 500 bucks for basically a brand new motor. Everything with the 351 is included, radiator, ignition module, everything, and the install would be free, save the cost of a case of beer and some pizza.
Sorry for it being kind of a long one
But any input would be wonderful.
Both are good engines, so my suggestion is use the engine you'd rather have, so later, there are no regrets. The short term costs (or savings) might be outweighed by the "I wish I had..." feelings you'll get later if you don't get what you truely want to have. Whatever your decision, getting the engine you realy want under the hood is the right answer.
Thanks alot optikal and argo, I was leaning towards the 351 anyway.
I would like to keep my six, but right now being a college student, money is a little hard to save sometimes. Maybe I'll save it and build it up for some project down the road
thanks again
oh yeah, i forgot to ask
What will i need for the swap besides the motor mounts, ignition module, radiator, and possibly a new bellhousing(if it's an M block),and clutch for my np435. the guy is selling it for his dad and wasn't quite sure if it was a windsor or M block. All I know is that it's coming out of an 83 1 ton. One last question I promise. What was the last year for the 351M?
Thanks
your gonna have to take the frame mounts off the 351 truck and bolt them to your six truck
what year is the truck w/ the 300?
dont forget new exhaust
and the A/C (if equipped) hoses are different
my truck is an 81 4wd, are the mounts different for 4wd's?
and no A/C so thats not a problem
I found out it is a windsor so the bellhousing dilema is over, nad all of the electronics are coming with the motor, so it solves that too.
One last question, are the clutches for the 300 and 351 the same? Or should I go ahead and buy a new one? Exhaust is covered too, headers and dual straight pipe out the rear. No emmissions here in Bryan, Ohio
Again thanks for everyones help the swap should go smoothly now
you can reuse the clutch
the FLYWHEEL must match the engine
351 = 28 ounce inbalance
300 = neutral balance
302 = 28 or 50 ounce depending on year
all will bolt up but will vibrate like a SOB if its wrong
