I have a 97 F-150 4x4 5.4 runs great but i noticed when i start it up in the morning it has a very noticeable ratle maybe a nock. I use a very good 5w-50 oil and it hlods good oil presure. It stops after it warms up. can anybody help?
A common problem on these is broken exhaust manifold studs where the manifold bolts onto the head, usually on the passenger's side. It normally sounds like a loud tick and goes away when the engine is warm. Another issue that happens but isn't as common is piston slap. It usually sounds deeper than the manifold leak and goes away too when the engine is warm. Ford says that other than being annoying it isn't causing any problems.
I would check the exhaust studs first. Usually if you look above the starter, from under the truck, you'll see them.
Mine just started doing the same thing, but its loud and I mean really loud. To describe the sound I would have to say that its between a knock and the whistle sound you get from loose heat shields on an exhaust system. It only happens when its cold out, like 15 degrees and below. The sound follows engine rpm when in drive. when in park it reacts to RPM changes differently and quieter than when in drive. This morning was the second time its happened. started the truck to let it warm up before heading out. it sat there and made the squeel/knock noise as it idled for 10 minutes. I get in and do a few miles of 35mph and below, stop and go driving, it keeps doing it. I hop on the interstate and it did it until I hit 50mph or so and just quit as if someone flipped a switch.
Oh yeah, before I pulled out of the driveway I crawled under the truck to locate the noise. It sounded like it was coming from the torque converter.
forgot to mention that I replaced damn near all of my exhaust manifold studs this past summer and my starter. At first I thought that it was my starter not fully disengaging from the flywheel but the change in sound from when in drive or reverse vs when its in park or N has me thinking my tranny is feeling ill.
Hey thanks guys its nice to know that im not the only one. I will check all of the above, i hope its not piston slap it only has 97k on it but i dout it do's this truck runs like a new one. thanks again, Nick
I would refrain from using the 5-50 oil in your motor. If it is piston slap, that is not a bad thing since they have run them for 200K with no problems. It just sounds a bit odd at start up.
the 5-50 oil would be a little thin if it is piston slap, I was running 10-30 Castrol and change it with this 5-50 castrol synthetic oil hoping it was a flow isue. but I found that the noise is comming from the lower end of the motor, it all most sounded like it was from the coverter but i can't hardly see how, maybe it is? If it is piston slap what would you use as far as oil? If this could help
