Hello all. i have a 03 Expy FX4 and i have noticed water splash stains in the engine compartment and along the heads. i looked into the front fender wells and there are holes in the plastic fender well that look as if they are where rubber guards would be attached. i noticed there is a rather large opening into the engine compartment without them. i have looked at other expys and noticed they too are missing guards. i guess the question is do any of you have them. i checked with the Ford dealer and the parts picture doesnt show any. i might need to fabricate some.
I have been wondering the same thing about my 99 Expedition XLT. It seems like some rubber splash guards ar screens there would provide a lot of protection for the suspension and other lower engine compartment area.
In fact, I now wonder if this is why I have to have my entire front suspension rebuilt (upper and lower ball joints, etc, etc) at only 79,000 miles.
If I recall correctly, the F-150 had splash aprons installed in these areas, whereas the Expedition did not. I guess the Ford bean counters surmised that far fewer Expys would be seeing off road work than F-150's.
I think there are aftermarket aprons around. Just realize that while the installation of these aprons will reduce the quantity of water spray coming into the engine compartment, they will also impede air flow, creating a warmer engine compartment. I wouldn't install them unless they were really needed, particularly if you drive in hot weather.
