help alternator problems
I need help, tonite I put a new battery in my 88 and accidently got it backwards but it only touched once and sparked then I figured out my goof, problem is now my alt. is dead. My question is is there a fuse or something that would blow or is my alt. dead?

The inverted connection has the potential to kill the diodes in the alternator. If they are fried, the alt. is headed for that big rebuilder in the sky. Best thing to do would be to yank the alt. and have it tested.

Check for power on Bat terminal on back of alt- if none the fuse link prob has melted-blown.Link is made in wire and is usualy comes(feed) off post on starter solenoid (bat voltage)- pull on wire,( has a 3/4 in.long rubber block with guage-amp stamped on it) and if burnt will pull apart.Fuse link wire can be bought at any parts store- you will need a wire eye terminal, a section of fusable link wire and a heat shrink wire tube connecter to install.
