91 f150 302...been searching arround and cant find a answer...you 302 owners must of had same problem...got a thermostat stuck in open position (to much cooling).. i cant seem to get the right side bolt off..every tool i try to use is to big..u know dist. in way and the back of water pump is in the way also..i know its a 1/2 in. bolt but what did anyone use to get it out...is there a trick with a magic wrench or socket i haveint seen yet.....thanks guys...
If you use a box wrench to loosen the bolt, you can use an end wrench to get it the rest of the way, it is close quarters but doable without removing the waterpump. caution, there is often corrosion around the thermostat housing bolts and they are easily broken.
Actually, it is the timing cover that is in the way, not the waterpump.
Buy or make a stubby wrench. I cut a section out of the middle of a spare 1/2" combination wrench and welded it back together. Total length is now 3 3/4". You need both the box and open end to R&R the thermostat like FSC suggested. '90 F150 302.

I always use a deep-offset box-end wrench to get my thermostats off, and if I recall, they're 1/2" (at least that's what works). I also loosen the distributor and turn it out of the way, then re-time it. (You could mark it before you turn it, too, if you don't have a timing light). Try the following Sears part #s:
hey guys thanks for the replys...was able to get it out useing a stubby 1/2 in. wrench as per the reply but wouldent ya know it the thermostat must have sliped a bit while turning the houseing down so coolent is pouring out...gotta redo it all over again...was wondering if i can save some time and just remove the hose and try to realign the thermostat in the groove if not any ideas on how to keep the therm. from moveing while putting it back together...thanks
The last two thermostats I put in my '90 came with a gasket that was peel and stick on one side. So the thermo is held in place while you tighten the housing bolts. ...Terry
talk about a rotten day...was 13 degrees outside to day and it took 5 hrs with two walking trips to parts store but think i got it done...changed that gasket 3 times due to leaking ..finaly buying a new housing..guess the old one was kinda pitted and wouldent seal...funny for a while after starting the gauge was reading on the A in normal but there was no heat till i started raceing the motor..mabey some air in the lines?? anyway it settled down to between the O & R and held before the running position was at 12 oclock btw r & m but ive got heat now...gotta dubble check it in morning to make sure no more leaks...thanks for the replys guys...
