All the bolts on my 92 are metric. The 1/2 inch is a 13mm you can get a tighter fit on the bolt with the 13mm socket. Good luck

92 lightning: Actually 1/2" is 12.5mm. 1" is 25mm. The 91 is also metric.

Bass 4163: Use either a 12Millimeter (MM) or a 13MM wrench. It's a tight fit but it will come off.

If you use a box wrench to loosen the bolt, you can use an end wrench to get it the rest of the way, it is close quarters but doable without removing the waterpump. caution, there is often corrosion around the thermostat housing bolts and they are easily broken.

Actually, it is the timing cover that is in the way, not the waterpump.

Buy or make a stubby wrench. I cut a section out of the middle of a spare 1/2" combination wrench and welded it back together. Total length is now 3 3/4". You need both the box and open end to R&R the thermostat like FSC suggested. '90 F150 302.

I always use a deep-offset box-end wrench to get my thermostats off, and if I recall, they're 1/2" (at least that's what works). I also loosen the distributor and turn it out of the way, then re-time it. (You could mark it before you turn it, too, if you don't have a timing light). Try the following Sears part #s:

0944317
0944362

Actually, to get technically picky, 1/2" is 12.7mm and 1" is 25.4mm

The last two thermostats I put in my '90 came with a gasket that was peel and stick on one side. So the thermo is held in place while you tighten the housing bolts. ...Terry
