Question What yaer 460?

I have a 77 f150 4x4 with a 460. After decoding the VIN, the truck came factory with a 400. The previous owner said he just came across the 460 and h put it in. Now that I have the entire truck torn down to the frame, I'am going to rebuild the motor. Now, that being said, how do I find out what the the engine came from? Is there a stamp or anything on the engine that will give this info? It still has the factory manifold on it and the valve cover emmissions sticker is unreadable...

Thanks for any help on this.

The number for the heads will be near the exhaust ports on the top of the head and centered on the head, sort of. Right below the valve cover flange.

start with the block there are 2 number you can get one will give the revision of the block the other is the actual cast date. The one you care about the most is the revision number, and it will be cast into the block right behind where the starter goes. The build date casting is in the lifter gallery if you are interested but not nearly as important as the revision, and harder to decode.

Ok...I found out that the engine came out of a 78 model truck. I was able to get this off of the valve cover emmisions sticker...barely. Since the engine is still in the truck, is there another way I can find the revsion number or will it matter since I know what year the engine came from? I am asking all of this because I want to get my shopping list together to minimize the down time once I pull the motor. The only aftermarket stuff I plan on putting in are headers, manifold, carb (already have..holley truck avenger), and upgrading the altenator to a 100amp and upgrading the ignition system with new coil, distributor, etc. Can I get all of this without the revision number?

you don't need revision number if you know it came from a 78 that is all you need to know for the things you are wanting to buy. with the exception of the headers and those you need to buy for the year of truck it's going in. But for your info on the engine, the block should be a D1VE-A2b casting revision, and the heads should be D3 castings, it is an internally balanced engine (you will need that info incase you need to change the flexplate/flywheel because you can not use the one from the 87 on that engine)

Keep in mind one can swap a valve cover from another motor.

This is true...When I contacted the previous owner he did tell me that he pulled from the wrecked truck and put it in the one I have. Everything is supposed to be original. He just didn't know what year truck he pulled it from

for all intents, and purposes you can still follow what I said if yo are still curious look at the block right behind the starter it will be a vertical casting as long as the number isn't a D9TE casting it will be an internal balanced engine other than that everything you want to change will not make a difference as to what year of engine it is.

Up date here...
I mentioned the VECI label stated the year on my 460 is a 78. I have the casting number form the block that came from behind the starter:

DIVE-6015-A2B

Can anyone out there decipher this for me??

Thanks,
Mike

it's a 71 casting revision this would still be right for the 78, they didn't change the casting revision until 79 which would have been a D9TE casting number

Thanks Monsterbaby. One more question for ya...Given this casting nmber, what years are the parts interchangable? Mostly things like brackets, etc. As mentioned before, nothing internal will be changed. Not right away anyhow.

externally everything should be interchangeable on these engines, as far as brackets, and such I am not sure what you are asking about but the holes in the heads and block for mounting accerious never changed if that is what you want to know, about the only thing to worry about would be if you were changing stuff from a year that had a serpintine belt but that has more to do with the belt than the engine itself. You really only need to worry about interchangabiliity on internal parts which you say you not changing anyway so your good to go.
