heater core problems I think

ok I was driving along today and steam started coming from my dash and anti freeze was leaking out from under the dash board. these problems lead me to believe that it is my heater core. am I correct?

Yep. Depending upon what kind of vehicle it is, you're in for a lot of frustration and/or some intense vocabulary lessons. For what should be a relatively simple repair has been transmorgifried into a procedure that rivals brain surgery in its complexity and blatant assault on manual dexterity. Also...

Unless you're driving a Ford truck, in which case it's a straight-forward procedure that'll take 20 to 30 minutes.

If you're talking to me, I have a '95 F150. It actually took longer than that, cause I broke the job into two parts. First I pulled off the hoses and spliced them together with a hunk of copper tubing, and pulled out the core. That way I was able to drive it around for a day or two until I got a new core, and some more time. After putting the new core in place, I undid the splice and connected the hoses, and only need to top up enough to fill the new core.

One other prob that will look like your core is leaking: the hoses arent clamped tight enough, or they are rotten. The coolant will leak into the heater core housing. Check this first to make sure it isnt this before you get into a major core replacement. My '72 is about a 1/2 hr job, but I have done some that required dismanteling almost the whole dash.
