I have slop, about 1/4 turn in my steering. All tierods are good and the joints in the steering are also good. It is comming from the steering gearbox. Has anyone adjusted this? How?, I noticed a setscrew but which way should I turn it?
On top of the gearbox, you will see a 'stem' with a jam nut around it. Loosen the jam nut, careful not to allow the stem to turn w/the nut. Once loose, turn the stem clockwise. Make small adjustments. Going too far will affect your steering in a negative kind of way. Good luck.
I haven't done it on a Ford but on GM you are supposed to jack-up and support the front end and then turn the wheels all the way to the right and adjust the set screw in until you feel resistance and then back-off a little---then turn wheel left and repeat. It worked great to get rid of the slop.
I have the same problem in my 99 .I replaced the steering box with a rebuilt and nothing improved.I also replaced power steering pump, slapped in 4 bilstein shocks, ball joints, tie rod end, drag link and tires. Its still sloppy. Each repair shop swears how geat the repair they did,but It's still sloppy.I'm going to try a NEw steering box.
Sounds expensive!! You have nothing to lose so try adjusting the steering using the bolt on top of the steering box as described above. Just go a little at a time and see what happens.
Look at your rag joint on your steering shaft. If you are throwing money at the truck, replace the shaft with a Borgeson unit. They are much better than the stock shaft
