in 78 f-250 4x4 crew cab did they ever make a long box? and to make a short box to a long box what has to be done? and is the gas tank in a crew cab the same as a 78 reg cab with the gas tank behind the rear diff?
I had a 74 long box and wanted to swap it onto my 78 crew cab, which is a short box. Had to cut 20 some odd inches from in front of the wheel well, then another 10 or so inches behind the wheel well, then reweld everything back together. Decided it was too much of a job, so I just looked around till I was able to find a relatively decent short box and swapped that on instead.
My 74 is custom extended. You have to remeber drive shafts and angle, fuel lines and pressure, Wiring and water, get pesonal with your tape measure and don't try to eyeball it. Not to mention the bed mounts.
I have a 78 crew cab that has a rear tank. I bought it that way. I thought they all had tanks oringinally behind the seat but my cab has no sign that the filler hole was repaired. I have a 78 regular cab that has a fuel door but the crew cab has no door. Don't know if mine is original. Maybe you can see it in my picture thats in my gallery. JOHN
All the rear tanks are 19 gal as far as I know. The front tanks are different between shortbeds and long. I had a 79 crew with long-bed. Don't know about 78, anythings possible with Ford. The only rear tanks that I know of that are really special are the Super Camper Specials. They are a whole different truck from Cab back.
Have you seen any other crew cabs in Ohio??? These are mighty rare beasts !!!
John, while on my way to class this afternoon, I spotted a late 70's F250 crew cab 4x4 with an 8' bed driving the streets of Findlay. My eyes about popped outta my head! I had the digital camera in my truck, but was gonna be late for class. So I drove around the neighborhood after class, but couldn't find it. I did notice it had a 32 on the tag for county. So, I know it is local. If I ever find it, I'll try to find out the story on it and post pictures. It was definatly a head turner!
