[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-May-02 AT 10:21 PM (EST)]I put all MSD stuff on my 351 when I rebuilt it, (MSD 6A controller and a MSD billet aluminum distributer). The engine is a 79 and went in an 85 F150. Installation was a breeze and I love the way it performs. One word of caution.....an MSD 6A puts out a HELLUVA charge. Be careful how you handle it. My buddy had me turn the engine over while he was watchin something under the hood when we first went to start the new engine up. He had the coil wire out of the coil when I hit the switch. He yelled for me to stop and then told me a blue white spark about 3 inches long shot out of the end of the coil. Be sure and treat it with respect.
I am the original owner of a E150 77 Econoline 138" window van, 351W, dual tanks, LSD rear (3.73 I think) and 3 sp standard.
I have added Helwig f/r swaybars and helper springs. I use a Hensley hitch to tow an enclosed racecar trailer of about 8,000 lbs.
I have rebuilt the 2bbl carb, and get around 10-11mpg when towing, and use 93 octane to avoid detonation, as this poor van really has to work hard.
No oil consumption on 77,000 miles always with Mobil 1.
I have recently had total momentary ignition loss, and suspect the ignition module may be going.
MSD installation questions:
Does it replace the ignition module?
Why did you replace distributor? the MSD can use
stock distributor?
Will this improve performance (I cannot complain about my mileage)?
I may also want to add a diffent manifold and carb, like the Edelbrock 600cfm, but this is not much flow improvement over the stock 2bbl, so am I better off keeping stock intake system?
Just looking for experienced input, as many seem to be preaching but have not been there, as you seem to have.
