Exclamation E4OD Question. Need help fast.

I have a 93 f-350 7.3 IDI diesel with a piece of crap e4od. The thing keeps slipping and not wanting to go in reverse. At times it seems to be the torque converter and others the transmission. I have a guy that is selling a rebuilt e4od and transfercase out of a 91 Bronco with a 351. He also has a HD torque converter with it. The Bronco had a bad electrical fire and the thing is toast. I need to know if this trans and torque converter will fit in my truck. If anyone can help me I'd really appreciate it.

Thanks, Jeff

Welcome to FTE, Jeff!!!

Sorry to say that the transmission needs to come from another diesel engined Ford preferably from a 95-97 because they have most of the Ford updated parts

I have the same problem with my E4OD in my 1993 Bronco. Do you have to rev up to 2500 to get it to move? Does it feel like the emergency brake is stuck when you are in reverse then when you disengage does it clunk and drift normally?

That is what mine does, and I'm planning on a rebuild.

Yeah, the pre 95 E4ODs had some problems, especially the diesels. The diesels were hard on the torque converter which then killed the rest of the tranny.

You would want to either get a tranny out of a 95 or newer diesel or one that had been rebuilt with all the upgrade parts especially the TC.

This was what a tranny shop owner told me way back.

Good Luck,

The bellhousing bolt patterns are different, and the case/bellhousing is one piece. It won't bolt to the diesel.

Thanks Everyone!

It's too bad it won't fit. I would've been ****ed if I had bought it and it wouldn't fit. The reverse problems I've been have are very strange. Sometimes it shifts into reverse so smoothly I don't even know that it engaged. Other times I have to rev the engine up a few times to around 2500 rpm and then it will shift into reverse real hard. Sometimes it will also not back up until it hits 2500 rpm and when it does start to move it moves very slowly. When it does this its almost as if the trans is in reverse but the torque converter is slipping. Iv'e changed the fluid and filter and also dropped the valve body down and cleaned it out. Niether of these things has helped. I was thinking of installing a shift kit in the trans, most companies claim it will fix some of the reverse problems. If anyone has any ideas I could use them.

Thanks, Jeff

With as many years your truck has, it might be that your tranny is worn out and time for a rebuild. When a tranny is slipping and needs to rev to get into reverse, you got problems and usually they are not simple or cheap to solve. Hope I am wrong.

Usually you can expect a tranny to be looking at a rebuild at about 100,000 miles assuming decent maintenance etc. There is a lot of variation here so you might expect troubles plus or minus 30K miles or more from that. What I was told is that the Diesel E4OD will slip the TC and then kill the rest of the tranny if it isn't taken care of right away. Some people get lucky and have no trouble, but others do have trouble.

My 94 gas E4OD needed a rebuild(Torque shudder and harsh shifting) at a bit over 50K. But, that was due to my stupidity, I think. I was towing pretty regular and neglected to check the fluid frequently. I got low on the fluid which caused things to heat up etc. Also I don't know the history of the truck prior to 36K since I bought it used.

Good Luck, but chances are your tranny is just worn out.

IMHO, the 3 main things that kill ATs prematurely are: abuse, negligence, and heat. Someone on the Bronco forum posted that his C6 is still fine at 400k miles!!! Myself, I have E4OD with almost 160k, and a clean bill of health. All my other cars with AT ('71 Ford LTD, '77 Cutlass Supreme) had over 200k on their trannies. I'm very religious about fluid level checks and my truck has a tow package with HD cooling.

Where would you find a reverse band on an E4OD?

Hint: There isn't one. There are no adjustments possible on an E4OD.
