New to this site and spent some time looking for my problems but didnt find some so I will start with # 1.
I have a 93 5.8 eddie bauer with push button 4x4. After some electrical shorts I had to replace my dash pull **** for my headlights as well as the switch for the tailgate window. The 4x4 button isnt working now either. I checked the fuses for correct slots and ampige. Is this common? where do I find the short?
When I replaced the pull **** I noticed blackening on one of the plug openings like burning.?!?! Little HElp, I want to keep this beauty
The main headlamp pin has a tendency to overheat in the switch. My 92 did it. Replaced the switch and no further problems. I've seen situations where someone decided to up the wattage of the headlamps and failed to realize that the wiring must be upgraded to handle the additional amperage draw. If you still have something shorting up in there, the best way to hunt it down it to look for blown fuses. If there aren't any, the problem isn't a short rather, a bad connection. Fuse 18 and circuit breaker 12 feed the electronic shift module for the transfer case. CB 12 is also the power feed for the keyswitch in the tailgate but NOT the dashboard switch.
I don't know much about the large silver fuses, I have never played with them. Are they replaceable if there could be a short in one of them?
They aren't fuses, they are auto-resetting circuit breakers. If they have been tripped too many times or overheated for some reason, they may not reset or they may be prone to tripping prematurely. The can be replaced just like the fuses but they cost more. Don't replace them with fuses though...you will not be able to keep a fuse of the proper amperage intact in the circuit breaker positions.
After picking through 15 trucks or so in 3 different junk yards I finall found a 94 with what I needed. (an intact dash) I purchased all of the switches and wire harnesses for the dash and just finished replacing them with perfect results. It seems when I had my power surge it blew allthe dash electronics. Everything works so I am one happy camper.
