Fuel Filter questions
Changing the fuel filter is about as close to a "tune-up" as you can get for a diesel. Since you've got an OBS* truck like mine, the next time you change your fuel filter, have some Q-tips handy and clean the fuel pressure regulator screen. Once you've removed the fuel filter, look down the driver's side of the canister, on the inside. You'll see a hole about 1/2 way down. Inside that hole is the screen to the fuel pressure regulator. Moisten the end of a Q-tip, and gently reach back inside that hole until you feel the screen. Clean the screen as well as you can, replacing the dirty Q-tip with clean ones, until they come out clean. The black crud you'll be pulling out is the sluff from your injector O-rings, and is normal. By cleaning the screen, you'll enable the fuel pressure regulator to operate more efficiently, and you might very well see a little improvment in smoothness and power.
While you're messing around with the fuel system, you might also consider shimming the fuel pressure regulator. Do a search for that, and let us know if you have any more questions.
