ac isnt working at low speeds. works great when going down freeway....
condensor is clean an unobstructed, clutch is locking and staying locked. sounds like dying compressor or system has leaked and is low on refrigerant. gonna borrow a gauge set tommorow to get pressures. i dont know much about ac so i dont know where to go from here
well without getting to technical with 134a i run mine no less then 34# on the suction side at a high ideal if your suction line is frosting up its over charged or not enought air flow across evaporator coil i could get more technial but you need to understand the princables involved with refrigeration maybe this will help
the line that runs from the compressor to the condensor?? black canister back by the plenum is getting cold at idle and water was condensing on line 75degree ambient and 20 percent humidity. i know compressor compresses refrigerant, compressed ref goes through evap coil expanding and cooling then goes back through condensor and back to compressor??? ok maybe i dont have a clue....
it is normal for that line to sweat
the black canister is the acumulator it prevents liquid refrigerant from entering compressor the condenser is located in front of vehical in front of radator were compressed refrigerant (vapor ) from compressor enters condenser and heat being rejected as it passes thought condenser in wich cuases the vapor to be converted back into a liguid form then from condenser it goes to the evaporator the high presssure liquid is then forced throught a metering device at wich it flashes back to a vapor form flows throught the evaporator asorbing the heat then the low pressure refrigerant flows throught the acummulator to prevent any excess liquid from entering compressor then the cycle start all over
the compressor and metering device is where the high and low pressrue are seperated
well thats enought i got a little winded thier sorry about that
Jake you're low on refrigerant. If the system were full it would cycle in this cooler weather.
Can't tell you much about the compressor without hearing it for myself. I'd say though that if it's noisier than usual it's on the way out.
i havent heard it cycling when the ac isnt on. the compressor sounds find and put the screwdriver on it and listened to it and bearings sound ok also. ive been using (or trying to) the last couple days its been in the mid 80's here
Yeah when the AC is off it won't even come on. With it on and the system is low the pump will come on as usual but the high side will never build enough pressure for the high pressure switch to trip and shut off the pump for a short while. It will just continue to run. With only enough R-134a in there to build a little pressure but not carry heat it adds up to a very weak AC system. Just about any place that offers AC service can recharge your system.
it used to come on when it wasnt on. it would just spin the compressor for a cople seconds, my 94SD and 97 gmc van cycled the compressor also. the company i work for has a refrigeration/hvac side im gonna have one of thoose guys put there gauges on it and squirt some more R134a in it if need be. well if its low on refrigerant it leaked somewhere didnt it?? or does the r134a "wear" out? every other truck ive had when the ac stopped working it was broken parts and it had to be recharged anyway. 94 had a compressor lockup so had to get a new comp and change it to r134a thats all ive had to do to that.
The refrigerant doesn't wear out, it has to be leaking somewhere. A common place is the front bearing on the compressor, the line attachments at the rear of the compressor and the service valve at the accumulator. The leak may not be large enough to worry about if you only have to charge every year or so.
You can get it at you local Wal-mart or at J. C. Whitney, or other Car places. No license needed for 134A. Regular freon...sorry...not available to general public.... Ain't going to part with my couple of cans left from years gone by, still have a vette that needs it.

Yeah, I think the going rate is pretty near $1000.00 for the 30# cylinder! And the last time I asked was about 3 years ago.
