Smile Steering column to use?

I have a 79 f-150 2wheel drive automatic with bad tilt column.
Does anyone know what years and style are interchangeable with this, possible to use 4x4?

Hi, you can use a tilt column from a 78-79 truck. To use the one from a 4x4 just remove the shaft extension and put your flange to bolt up to the rag joint. 73-77 are very similar and will work but don`t look exactly the same.

The only difference between 2x4 & 4x4 steering column to box is between the end of the column to the box.The column is the same.

The 2x4 has a mounting flange to the rag joint & the 4x4 has a shaft with U-joints in it.

Can you install a U-joint at the base of a 2wd column for use in a 4wd truck? Or, otherwise modify the 2wd column to work in that 4wd application?

late columns have the rag joint flange welded to the steering shaft.
so you need a intermediate shaft with a rag joint. I know borgeson makes one if you can't
find an original one

Mil1ion, Can you take a rag joint off the column of a '76 F100 2WD AT and convert it to u-joint? Would I need the 4x4 column? I need to replace my butchered column anyway.

a 76 2wd column, most likely has a splined shaft and a bolt-on ragjoint coupler
