I just purchased an 84 f-250 4x4 that is in awsome shape for a paltry $500.00... heres my question... The exhast was basically not there, but I also noticed it did not have a cat converter on it... When I looked at the emissions decal it says "catalyst - exempt" is this true? it has the original 351w in it and it runs great... need to chang a freeze plug and the exhaust, but need to know if the f250 4x4 does or does not have a cat.... anyone that can help, i'd really appreciate it..
It has none of those items... I called the ford dealer and found that the 351w with a 4 bbl does not have a cat... 2bbl does... I lucked out... also went to shoplet.com... the value for my truck has a range of $3669.00 to $6081.00 ... I payed $500.00 , Its nice to meet people that just want to clean the garage out!!!... I gotta watch for the cops, I think I stole this one.. Thanks for the reply..
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 30-Aug-02 AT 01:18 PM (EST)]right...if it says "Catalyst" it must have a cat. If it says "non-catalyst" then it doesn't have one. I'm not sure what the "exempt" means though. Maybe there was an exception. Be careful though, the Ford dealer is not always aware of smog laws, and the changes that were made for specific state laws such as here in California. I would check with a smog facility.
My `82 has "non- catalyst" on the label, and I was wondering the same thing. But mine has had some exhaust work done to it. Everybody I talk to says that the 3/4 and 1-ton`s were exempt from a cat. If anyone knows for sure, please let us know because I`m about to put a new exhaust system under mine too!!
`82 F-250 Custom** 4x4 ** 351W ** 39.5--15x16.5** SS- TSL`s ** 6" Lift ** Granny 4-speed**** If you can`t run with the BIG DOGS , stay on the porch!!!
I don't beleive that all were exempt, but if the sticker says "non-catalyst" then your truck does NOT require a cat, and didn't come with one from the factory.
Well I have an 85 F250 2wd w/ a 460. Mine also has no cat converter. I live in California and I bought the truck new here where emission laws are tough (though stupid and self defeating at times). I think that the rule is that above a certain GVWR, you're exempt from cats'. My truck also doesn't require unleaded fuel.
Hi
Due to Emission laws in the late seventies and eighties, cats were odd thing. Many cars and light trucks had them BUT all compaines offered a "heavy duty emissions exempt" package. These were on large trucks usually with a 8600 CVW or higher. They had large carbs and no smog pumps due the reasoning that these trucks worked hard and needed all the power they could get. Ford itself offered this package until 1986 which would mean yes your 1986 F-250 had no cat and does not need one.
p.s. Con.grts on the 500 dollar truck!
Mine also has the smog pump too, thanks for sounding out hear, learned something about my truck... I'll have some pics here soon... It looks like a new truck, fresh paint and interior.. I feel like I stole this thing...
Well my 86 F250 4x4 that just bought has a cat...it also has a sticker catalyst exepmt. One of the previous owners removed the smog pump and installed a cat. I have been told by the person that I bought it off of, that it passed emissions. This is the only thing that worries me...passing emissions. It has a new Edelbrock #1406 and seems to be running a little hot at times, something else to look at. It is a plow truck and dont use it other than winter. Hopefully I can navigate around emissions somehow. I dont want to take my chances failing for some odd reason.
