I'm finally getting my truck drivable and I have a question about my rocker arms. I can hear them kind of rattle at higher RPM so I took of the valve cover and it looks like they are a little loose. They don't have any play up or down but some of them move side to side. Is this very serious? I don't really have the time or money to fix this right now but I need to be able to drive my truck. What do you guys think?
A little bit of side to side is normal ......but only very little. If they seem tight up and down they're probably ok. Are you sure what you are hearing at high rpm's is the rockers? Usually if rockers need adjusting you will hear a tap-tap-tap at idle, but when you accelerate the sound goes away. Could it be spark knock instead?
I'm not sure it's the rocker arms. What does it sound like? It doesn't rattle at idle but in higher RPM you can hear sort of a chattering sound. It's there warm or cold but only at high RPM.
I'm almost positive that's spark knock. Do you run regular gas or premium? If regular, next time you fill up, put premium in it. You don't have to get a whole tank if you don't want to, half a tank will do. Drive it long enough to be sure you are drawing premium, then try your high speed run. If it's spark knock the premium gas should eliminate it or at least it won't be nearly as bad. Carbon buildup in a cylinder over time increases your compression. One day the truck runs good on regular, then before you know it it's pinging (spark knock). And it sounds just like the chatter at higher rpm's that you describe. You may end up having to adjust your timing to fix the problem.
Since rockers are the subject here , I`ll ask a question too . I have a 400M and I hear them a wee bit too . Are they adjustable ? They kind of look like thier not . Thanks
