In march it will be one year that I purchased some BFG Long Trails for my X. I always kept them inflated enough to properly support the vehicle (atleast 55-60 lbs. per tire); and rotated and balanced on time. My problem is that they seemed to wear down a little sooner than I had hoped. Bear in mind that these are load range D tires. (yes, I'm kicking myself ) My question is: on average, how long should tires last on an X? If you all could, please list the type of tires you have, how long you've had them and the treadwear. I'm asking because I'm in the market and trying to get an idea as to how long my tires should last me. Thanks.
I ran a set of 35" 12.5 16.5 BFG AT KO's for 48,000 miles. They had 2/32 left to the wear bars when I took them off. Wear bars are at 4/32 if I'm not mistaken.
I got 50k miles out of my original Firestone A/Ts. I replaced them with Dunlop Rover A/Ts. I now have about 25k miles on them and they will need to be replaced in the spring. Obviously, they won't be replaced with another set of Dunlops. I expected closer to 50k miles.
Hmmm.....that sounds about right, but I highly doubt I'll even get 50K out of my BFG Long Trails. I want to replace them with some Michelin LTX M/S tires. They're pricey, but everyone I've talked to said they're the best. Does anyone have an idea as to how long they might last?
My 2000 2WD PSD X has 22k on the tires and I expect to replace them next fall because I think they'll be down to the wear bars by then and I don't want to go through one more winter on them. It will only have 30k to 32k on the tires at that point. These are Firestones - the same ones that came on the 2004 X's. I don't tow much other than the occasional trailer to the dump.
My 03 X 4x4 has the stock BFG's & @ 45K miles (of mostly around DFW miles) still look like they have a lot of life left in them...
Have always had good results with AT tires as far as wear...
but I did swap my shocks out early on to better Rancho 9000x adjustables and I DO rotate them every 5K miles to balance out the wear....
but I also drive like an idiot (not really - just fast)
so that probably offsets all the "good" things I did...
but I'm perfectly happy with the bfg's !

Just so I'm sure, these are the BFG Rugged Trail T/A's that you speak of?
The original D-rated Firestone tires on my '01 had 75K miles on them when replaced during the recall. The originals appeared to have at least another 10K to 15K miles left in them. I kept them at 60PSI all around. I do not know what PSI the original owner used ... I bought the X with 53K miles on the clock.
I sold the new replacement tires, and currently running E-rated Nitto 305-70R-16. I've had D-rated BFG's last 97K miles on an '87 F350 crew-cab SRW.
I have the original Pirellia's on my 2WD EX. They have 40,000 miles, always inflated 60-65 psi. I can hardly see any wear. I rotate every 10k and I'd say 60-80,000 might be possible. My driving is all highway and most at 75 mph.
I'm driving about 1100 miles per week and have just gone through a set of Coopers in 47000 miles. I run 50psi all around and rotate roughly every 5K. for the most part I'm all highway and don't tow too often.
I ran Pirelli A/S on my last car (JEEP Cherokee Sport) and got close to 90K before replacing them.
Still looking for user experience for the Michilen LXT.
Had'nt thought about the Firestones - Hmmmm.
On the uneven wear problem - questions:
1) Are your tires properly spin balanced (coulda thrown a weight)?
2) Are you rotating?
3) Have you bumped into or onto something unmoveable with one tire lately? (Front end alignment)
I'd head to your local tire dealer (the one that really knows - not the dicount store) and get an opinion.
