I have a 99 Expedition, it has started jumping/surging when I accelerate, it seems to just do this when we are at a steady speed. I have watched the RPM's and they do not change when this is occuring. I have taken this to the shop and they have stated that it did not pull any codes and just needs a tune up, of course they wanted $650 to do this, so I went and picked the truck up. Does this sound like a tune up, or transmission problem?
First off, Welcome to FTE! Hang around and you will find answers to most of the questions you can think of.
As for the jumping, this is turning into a common problem with Expy's as they age. I too have a '99 and it has had this exact problem a couple of different times. The problem is not with the transmission, it's actually one of the COPS (Coil-On-Plug). I have had the problem when I drove thru deep water and got my engine wet and also when it was extremely humid outside. The problem is, unless the coil goes out or almost out, sometimes it won't throw a code. As of yet, I haven't fixed it.
If it isn't doing it all the time, just deal with it until it throws a code and the CEL comes on. At that point, take it to AutoZone, have them read the codes and tell you what cylinder the misfire is on and then purchase a coil from them (about $45) and replace it.
