Can someone please post how to set the timing on a 1980 F-100 w/ 300 I6? I finally have it ready to run but my friend tried to time it by ear and didn't do a very good job. It's running OK but has a rough idle. I tried adjusting the carb but still idles rough so I figure it's the timing. Anyway, if someone could kindly tell me how I will finally be able to take her for a test drive. Thanks.
OK, I've been reading some past posts and I'm not sure it's the timing now. I know I need to set it so if someone could still tell me how I would appriciate it. Well here's what happens:
When at idle it runs very rough. almost like it's missing but I know thats not the case. When I take off everything seems to smooth out. Also at higher RPM I can hear a rattling sound. Sounds like a diesel, but only at High RPM. It's pretty bad when it's cold. It won't stay running until it warms up a little. I've adjusted the carb as much as I know how. If anyone has any tips on that I would appriciate it. But other than adjusting the carb and timing it I don't know what to do.
I just bought the truck from a friend of a friend for $100 and it was in really bad shape. I have taken the head off and cleaned it out. Flushed the cooling system, rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, new spark plug wires/spark plugs, replaced all the seals/gaskets in the engine, and put a rebuilt T-18 in it. So it's starting to come together, the only thing I can't figure out is this Idle problem. Oh and if anyone knows of a good but cheap paint shop in the Oklahoma City area plase let me know. THANKS.
sounds like predetination (pinging) to me. This is a symtom of your timing being too far advanced. Have you checked your timing with a light? If you are pinging at high speeds, or under hard acceleration you need to retard the timing or you can cause internal damge to your engine (your valves and pistons are slowly leaving through your exhaust pipe).
If you do not have a light, retard the timing untill the pinging goes away. This can also be helped by running premium fuel, but that gets kinda pricey.
