If it's an automatic you need the whole small block transmission because the bell housing is not removeable, the transmission housing is a one piece casting, only the tailshaft housing is removeable. Also, there are 904 and 727 small block transmissions, the 727 is the heavy duty model.
you need a smallblock bellhousing and motor mounts and mount-to-engine brackets for a 318. 318 brackets can be shimmed to fit a 360, but 360 brackets will not work with a 318. they have to be truck brackets, car brackets won't work.
There are no frame towers to deal with.
The 318 must have a rear sump truck pan, a center sump car pan will not work.
If the bellhousing bolt pattern is almost completely round it is a big-block bellhousing.
If the bellhousing bolt pattern is less round with a pronounced starter bulge on the drivers side its a small-block bellhousing.
If it has the starter mounting above the centerline and really far over on the driver side it is a slant-6 bellhousing.
