Tire Carrier?

I'm going to put a full size spare tire on my Aerostar. I was looking at the cable and it has a little rust on the end. I'd like to replace it. Can I use larger diameter cable? I noticed there's a no rub ferral on the cable were it goes thru the spare tire hub bracket. What can I do about replacing this ferral? I have the cable crimping tool.

Check with your local dealer's service department. My 95 Aerostar was recalled to have the spare tire carrier replaced. I can't remember if it was for cable breaks due to rust or winch seizing, but mine worked fine when they pulled it out and replaced it.

Your van may also be on the recall list. If not, there is obviously an "improved" version of the carrier available from Ford.

Cheers,
Eric

Mines a "late build" 94, it would be great to get a new spare tire carrier.

I checked; the recall was only for 95 short body Aerostars, there was nothing wrong with the spare tire carrier mechanism, it just let the spare tire rub against the brake lines. So I need to find out if I can replace the cable, unless you can tell me something different about the recall.

It is not just for shorties, it is for ALL Aerostars. Mine is a 94 Ext XLT. They only replace the cable.

I had mine in for the recall but the cable was ok. The rest of the carrier was rusted. I have since removed the carrier (just a few bolts) and grinded and repainted with gloss black rust paint. Looks great One of these days I have to put it back on. Spare is in the back for now.
