the wts light comes on for about 5 seconds then goes out when i plug it in, i replaced the relay next to the fuel filter, is there another one i should check, i hear it click when i turn ignition on but my biggest prob. is the smoke, if i rev motor to 2500 rpms, it smokes blueish/grey, and when its cold it does the same and while driving esp going downhill, it feels like its holding back and just billows smoke, burns my eyes in truck when it smokes like that. but at times it runs fine. a ford dealer said it might be that my thermosat stays open, but not sure of that, not to many people around here that work on diesels that can help me . any other info you can have me check would be greatly thankful, the truck is a rollback towtruck so i have to have it work good everyday
Subtow, How many miles are on the engine? If the thermostat stays open the engine probably would never get up to proper temperature, I think your temperature gauge would show a low reading, but the smoke should be white. Blueish/grey smoke isn't good. Might need the engine rebuilt. Some of these engines have had a problem with dust getting in around the air cleaner contributing to early engine failure. Let's see what some of the other guys on this forum think.
Another thing Subtow, does all this happen when the engine is cold? The holding back that you mention sounds like it might be the Exhaust Back Pressure Valve. This is a valve that closes when the engine is cold to help warm it up faster. It depends on the temperature as to how long it stays closed. When the valve is closed the truck will be slugish, but you still should have white smoke, not blue.
where is the exhaust back pressure valve? yes it is very sluggish in the morning, i can put my foot to the floor and it struggles and smokes then its like i turned a switch, it runs good but smokes, around 2500 rpm or when i let off on gas then push gas pedal down and it blows smoke
Hi Subtow, check out this thread...https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=332330 ...it has a good pic of the ebpv. I don't know if the 97 is different or not. I haven't looked at mine yet. I just drive it gently until it warms up and then it's good to go.
i have 95 powerstroke direct injection i was talking with many people about the sluggish when i start out in morning and also going downhill with blueish/ grey smoke, was told to check ebpv, i did it won't move for one, so i tapped on it, i went to start it, it sounded like something was moving in engine,so i started it, the valve moved alittle but not very much, what do i do to get it to move freely? i'm in buffalo ny, its 5degrees, so i can't disconnect it,
truck runs somewhat good, i put a new thermostat in it today seem to run better but the ebpv is still in same position all the time, i have to find out how i get it to work properly, if someone that knows about the ebpv, please let me know what i have to do to get it working, i tried tomove it by hand, but doesn't move, then i disconnected it, still no movement, i'm lost
Subtow has the truck been through a lot of salt use on the roads over there? I wonder if you have a siezed butterfly on the EBPV. Try removing the downpipe at the turbo outlet and looking inside. You will see what appears exactly like a butterfly valve on a carburator. See if it's partially closed. Try soaking all the moving parts with Free-all or similar penetrant. You gut out the EBPV if you want, but I agree with you on wanting to keep it with your winter temparatures there.
well, i took downpipe off, the butterfly was open when it was cold, drove it allday checked it again it was in same position as it was when cold, it was open , i can move butterfly, but i just goes back to be fully open, i'm really confused and disgusted, hope someone can help me on this, by the way, after i check the ebpv, i put it all back together, drove it, but i noticed it smokes as i drive and sluggish also
