Power steering pump problem

I have a 2000 F250 V-10 and on cold days the power steering starts to whine pretty good when it is cold, but on days that the weather is 40 or above it is fine. I noticed that the power steering reservoir overflowed yesterday when the weather was below freezing. When I turn the steering wheel the fluid goes down but when I release the wheel you can watch the fluid come to the top and then overflow. Is it time to replace the pump or is there something else causing this. Thanks for your help in advance.

From what I have been told by service this is "normal". I have noticed it on my truck and the loaner F150 (very loud) that they gave me. The thing I don't get is my '02 F350 never did this so how could it be normal now? Maybe they changed the makeup of the fluid? Are we doing damage that will show up later? In any event it can't be good....

My F250 is rather loud in the morning when its cold out too, but every ford i've ever owned has had a loud power steering pump. I don't by any means think this should be considered normal, but no problems yet, knock on wood.

We discussed this a few yrs back ,if you change the fluid to Synthetic the noisy will be less.

I had that problem on my 1994 f150, I changed the fluid and the problem went away. I used new tranny fluid recommended by Ford, I didnt use Power Steering fluid, this was about 5 years ago and still running smooth. I have a 2003 f250 cc 5.4 and do not have a problem with the steering pump.

Hope this helps.

Not really sure what the fluid is that's in there. I would have to assume its regular old Power Steering Fluid. The box blew up a while back, probably 7 months ago, so i had a new one installed. All said and done it ran me about 600 with labor. Apparently, Ford discontinued the idea that you can simply replace the .50 cent seal at the pitman arm. I was rather saddened by this discovery. So far i've had no other problems with it other that the noise in the moring for a min or two. Thats okay though, it was 5 this morning so it's allowed to make some noise.
