chip vs. microtuner

I am fairly new to this. Can someone tell me the advantages vs. disadvantages to a chip vs. microtuner?
What do I need to do to deactivate my EGR? Thanks

Welcome and Hello Rick !
you'll get a BUNCH of responses to this one...
let me try to "pre"-summarize

Tuners (or programmers) are not attached to the truck to operate, only to load and unload the "programs"...

Chips, obviously, are installed in the truck...
but there are no "chips" as such available for the 6.0....

only the tuners(programmers) or
modules that plug in in the engine compartment...

both basically do the same thing with engine tuning... but in a different way...

the programmer changes the stock program out to a more "effecient" program so the engine operates differently...

the modules usually intercepting the pcm(power control module - sometimes called computer) signals to or from the sensors to "fool" the computer into adjusting the infector impulse, boost, etc....

the tuner has multiple programs, but only one program at a time is loaded into the computer...

the modules usually have shift modes on the fly capability...

One tuner, the predator, allows you to update the program over the internet when new things are available, others do not and have to be sent back to the mfg with cost associated to upgrade.

the tuners usually do tranny programming to compensate for the increased power that plays havoc with the shifting...

the modules usually do NO tranny programming and the 3 to 4 shifts are typically wild events and rumor has it will tear up the tranny in some time period with beefing it up...

the tuners typically can remove the speed limiter and read the check codes.... the modules can't...

Rumor has it that anything over 100HP (or the related 260 to 300 lbft of torque) is too much for the tranny - even WITH proper tranny tuning....

That's why most with the tuners leave it on the "economy" mode which gives the benefit of about 65 HP more and improved mpg....

It all boils down to what you want...
some feel that the shift on the fly capability overrides ANY of the disadvantages... Some feel that setting it on one tune and leaving it there is the best method...

I've been more than pleased with the predator I got from this sites sponsor Motorhaven... we call it the "Predator Grin"

Hummm...double post problems Rick?

Ok here is a link to the EGR article https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/s...d.php?t=282640

Now on the 6.0 .....no chips work. You can reflash with a tuner, or install a fuel box which modifies the signal from the FICM

Welcome to FTE and be sure to check out the tech articles listed in the 6.0 section at the top.

Hi Rick,

Welcome to the 6.0 L forum and to FTE. Please take a moment to review the Welcome sticky post at the top of the forum page. There are a number of links to great threads and other info. There are also stickies for the SCMT and Predator tuners and if you read through those you'll find the topic of chip vs. tuner very well covered.

Again, welcome and enjoy!
