1981 F-100 Questions

Hello All,
I have found a 1981 F-100 with a 300 6 and a manual tranny. What kind of mpg should I expect with this truck? And what are the weak, strong points with this? What should I look for in this truck? And, they are just F-150s with an F-100 tag right? And, do any of you have any tips on it?
Thanks,
Chris

1981 F-100 Questions

Basically you are right, they are the same truck. F100's just have one less leaf spring in the rear. However, some F100's have the small 4.5 on 5 bolt pattern instead of the bigger 5.5 on 5 found on all F150's. I have an '83 F100 with the big bolt pattern. It depends on what manual trans you have. If you dont beat on the truck it will hold up just fine. The 300 can handle whatever you throw at it. The SROD or 4 speed overdrive can't take a lot of abuse but the 4 speeds with granny low can. I have the 3 speed manual and its been abused and has held up fine.

Thanks alot for answering some of my questions. I was wrong and I admit it. It doesnt have the manual tranny, it has an auto. What kind of mpg can I expect? And, how are the auto trannys? And, what are you talking about on that 5.5 on 5 thing or what ever? And, then i guess that they are decent trucks. But, did they ever make an F-100 with 4wd?
Thanks,
Chris

1981 F-100 Questions

I just had some transmission work done. Shop said that year is known for flywheel butting up against the converter and cracking it. Also had seal leaks. Wasn't to bad, Bill was $330.
Truck had over 140K.

I had previuosly rebuilt the tranny at about 90 K but do not know if they replaced the converter then. I doubt it.

My teenager also junked the 1st engine at about 130K but I picked one up a pep boys and was back in business for less than $1200.

I like my old truck and never plan to part with it.

Check your rear axel seals also.
