Antifreeze smell

Sometimes when I turn my heater on, or different occurances (sp) I get an antifreeze smell, I had a slight leak that I found the plastic elbow on my water pump was leaking, tightened it, no more leak. I don't seem to be down on coolant, and my window doesn't show any signs of a bad heater core, any one else just get a smell?? Or am I just paying too close attention??

You could be experiencing a small leak in your heater core. The leak could just be a pinhole, not really enough that you would notice a decrease in the coolant level, but enough that once the heater core gets hot that you can smell it. Another tell tale sign of a heater core leak is you can get some fogging on the windows, particularly the windsheild when the defrost is on. This is due to the moisture being contained within the heater core box.

I agree with BigRed350. All it takes is half a drop of coolant to really stink up the cab.

I had a similar problem. I had taken the truck in to the dealer because of an A/C switch issue and asked them to look into the faint antifreeze smell. I smelled mine mostly outside the truck when I got out but could never find any leaks. The dealership pressurized the system while they had it in. The water pump turned into quite a fountain under more than normal operating pressure. I was glad they found it before I was driving down the road and it went. I am not sure how much pressure they used. The truck had 78K miles when they found it.
