Side view mirror electronic controls

Hi, has anyone taken their sideview mirror appart? The electronic controls for both my sideviews don't work. When I push the buttons, the mirrors appear to be trying to move, but don't. I thought I might try and take them off the truck, take them appart, and clean up/ lubricate the gears. It's a 1998 F150 SCab 4x4 Lariat that I recently purchased, so I don't know how long ago they stopped working.

While I'm at it, I'd like to see what I can do about the signaling device that's inside the driver's sideview. The 6 red dot's that form the < don't appear when I signal. In fact, there aren't even any clear dot's visible when the signal is turned off. But you can see some red flashing, in almost a rectangular shape, in the mirror when I signal left. The passenger sideview signals fine. There are 6 well defined clear circles, which are always visible, and they turn red and flash when the right turn signal is used.

Any advice/instructions on how to dissasemble the mirrors would be much appreciated.

Regards

You can take the back panel off the mirror housing (the chrome/black/or body color panel, depending on your model) Carfully move the mirror face until you can see into the housing (flashlight might help) there should be some clips you can pry loose with a flat screwdriver. Then you can pop off the back cover and work on it. It's probably gonna be harder than it sounds, so just take your time so you don't break anything.

It is a lot harder to take off the housing. I tried to my drivers side mirror off and gave up. oh well, I guess I will try again now.

Thanks for the replies. Do you suggest removing the mirror from the door first?

I think it would be easier to leave it on the truck than to have it rolling around on the table.
