My dad is looking to buy a 98 Explorer Eddie Bauer with a 4.0 L engine with 116K and leather interior. It is in fairly good body shape. Its black. The person is asking $5000

I suggest running the serial number thru Consumer guide or Car Fax to see the history of it. He should also ask for any documentation for major repairs such as engine or trans. Depending on where you live, ask for the most recent safety and/or emissions test results.

I have the 98 XLT with a 5.0 and have NEVER had any major problems, just the usual stuff wearing out that comes with miles. HOWEVER, anyone I've ever known with the 4.0 has has problems with either the engine or transmission or BOTH. Maybe your dad will have better luck but why buy 4.0 when you can go V-8 and get the same MPG? My 2 cents.
