I just bought a 95 F150 4x4 with a 4.9L straight 6, 5 speed, only 90k miles. Noticed an oil leak. Are these engines prone to oil pan gasket leaks or rear main seal leaks. I'm hoping it isnt the rear main seal. Please help if you can, Alan
Well, where exactly is the leak appear to be coming from? A lot of these oil pans will rust, that can be a problem. It's hard to tell what the location of the leak is without more info.
My 93 started leaking badat around 98,000 miles. Thought it was the oil seal. But when I had the E4OD @ 103,000miles replaced I had him put a seal in then. He showed me the pan gasket had squeezed out and was leaking all over. But the main seal was good. I figured good insurance. $25.00 for a gasket set, 3 hours on the jackstands and it doesn't leak now. That included 1 hour wire brushing, priming and painting the oil pan. Couple of spots of surface rust but no perforations.
Thanks for the help, it appears to be the gasket at the rear of the oil pan as well as the gasket has also squeezed out and its running down onto the bell housing. I'll know more when I drop the oil pan. Pan not showing any sign of rust (yet). Alan
My 92 F150 5.0 V8 also was leaking near the starter and the pan gasket was actually squeezed out of between the oil pan flat gasket surface and block surface. I just unbolted the bolts on the back and sides of the oil pan and let the oil pan drop from the weight of the oil inside--about one half inch--and then used a screw driver to push the gasket back into the space between the oil pan gasket surface and the flat surface of the block and then torqued the bolts back down to 20 foot pounds or so and the gasket around the oil pan has been leak free since. No money spent and it took about 15 minutes to do.
