It's the carbon cannister. The hose does not go to the tranny, it goes to the fuel tanks. The cannister captures furmes that have evaporated from the fuel tank into a bed of activated charcoal. The gas cap is sealed to prevent these fumes from escaping via the filler neck. Such fumes (volatile organic compounds) are a major contributor to ground-level ozone and photochemical smog.
When you are driving the truck, the engine control computer opens a solenoid at an appropriate time to purge the vapors from the cannister into the intake plenum via a vaccuum line. The vapors are then burned in the combustion chamber.
The carbon cannister costs you no power or performance. The unvented fuel tank is safer than the 40 year old vented-style tanks. The avoidance of venting gas fumes to the atmosphere is good for air quality, and might even improve your fuel mileage. Please leave it connected the way that it is.
