Temp Sender

I'm wondering what temperature sender that fits my 302 and works with my stock guage?

Stock 51 guage and '84 engine. The Flathead sender will phyically fit but it's about 2" longer and I don't know how it would affect coolant flow.

I don't think the stock gauges will work with newer senders. Don't know it the stock sender will work. Most guys go with 302 sender install new gauge.

Nathan,

I scarfed this off another web site. They were discussing a non-EFI 302 V8 from an 85 Mustang. It that approximately what you have?

According to Probst's "Ford Fuel Injection & Electronic Engine Control", Ford's EEC-IV engine coolant temperature sensor measurements are as follows:
248F --- 1.18 Kohms
230F --- 1.55 Kohms
212F --- 2.07 Kohms
194F --- 2.80 Kohms
176F --- 3.84 Kohms
The web page goes on to say that the native 302 sensor is a variable resistance (a thermistor) type.

The temperature sensor description in my 56 shop manual says the original sensors work like the original fuel system gage and sensor - a bimetalic strip and heater arrangement in both the sensor and gage. I suspect it is the same for your original 51 gage and sensor, but you can check your manual.

As Tim mentioned, and you probably guessed, the stock gage won't work with the 302's native thermistor-type temperature sensor.

As far as using your original sensor, if you are keeping the engine electronics you need to make sure nothing else uses the engine temperature signal. I'm pretty sure the ECU does, and it won't like finding that bimetallic strip sensor on the input of the engine temperature signal. If you are not keeping the engine electronics, you can probably put a short pipe nipple in the block, then a female coupler, then your original sensor. Cut and rethread the nipple to fit your sensor length. If the nipple wall is too thick, you might have to bore or drill it out a little.

The only electronic thing on the truck is the duraspark ignition. I think I might try your idea George. I'm just planning on using the stock guage till I get my aftermarket guages ($500 cdn!).With the stock guage I can have fuel, temp and the oil pressure guage was also a direct bolt it. I don't think the original amp guage would like 75 amps although the wire justs runs through the wire loop. The guages I plan on getting are TPI. The website lists the 5" quad guages as having an outside diameter of 4 3/8" (not the face) which would be a snug fit in the original holes (no cutting).
